Speech from the Chairman of the National Craft Council (Dekranasda) Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta

Assalamu'alaikum Wr.Wb.

World Batik City, a prestigious honor and achievement that has been obtained by the Special Region of Yogyakarta from the World Crafts Council (WCC) - Asia Pacific Region, an international institution affiliated with UNESCO that focuses on increasing appreciation of various activities and issues of the Handicraft Community around the world. Yogyakarta has various privileges that have been acknowledged by people, both domestic and international.

As a city that has cultural histories with a noble value that remains sustainable until now, and I think it is comparable if aligned with other historical cities around the world. It was proven during the awarding of Yogyakarta as the World Batik City, Dongyang – China as the World City of Wood Carving and Donique Town – Chile as the World City of Chamantos.

Jogja International Batik Biennale 2018 which will be held on 2-6 October 2018 in Yogyakarta is one form of our joint responsibility as the predicate of Yogyakarta World Batik City. An international event that will be attended by participants from around the world who hold various discussions, fashion shows, exhibitions, carnivals and art visits about Batik in particular and craft art in general. This event is expected to open the eyes of the world that Indonesia has the potential of culture, art, and economics as well as the level of education equivalent to other developed countries.

With Yogyakarta as the representation of World Batik City, then all of Batik Indonesia will get the benefit because Yogyakarta is considered as the eldest child who has opened the door for Indonesian Batik craft in the eyes of the world.

I am as the Chairman of the National Craft Council of Yogyakarta Special Region, appealed to all stakeholders to give full support to the organization and implementation of Jogja International Batik Biennale 2018.

Background

World Craft Council (WCC) has crowned Yogyakarta as the World Batik City on October 18, 2014, in Dongyang City, China. Yogyakarta has considered meeting all 7 criteria (historical value, originality, regeneration, economic value, environmentally friendly, has an international reputation and has widespread). In acquisition, the title is certainly needed to be grateful for as well as emerge the real responsibility of Yogyakarta to always maintain and sustainably developing the 7 criteria, also to shows to the people of Indonesia and the world that this predicate is 'worth to obtain'.

For that purpose, the Jogja International Batik Biennale (JIBB) 2018 will take place from 2 to 6 October 2018 in Yogyakarta, with the aim of contributing to the development of Batik in Indonesia as well as an opportunity to elevate the Batik tradition at the world level.

Purpose

Theme

The theme of Jogjakarta International Batik Biennale (JIBB) 2018 is

“Innovation for Sustainable Future”.

This theme will oversee other sub-themes that will be the framework of the JIBB 2018 event.

Curatorial Introduction

Cross / Border / Batik

Batik Art in Yogyakarta (also in Indonesia) has a long and success stories which related to the technique and processes, motives, and the philosophical meaning. These three aspects (technique, motive, and meaning) are continues and develop. By that means, Batik techniques are in new challenges along with the creativity and demands of technology (such as Batik design made with a robot, the use of cold wax (malam), and others). On the aspect of the motive, it also experienced a remarkable development that usually coincides with a philosophical shift; from motives laden with philosophical content and the uses order (as it still used in the Kraton of Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat), to a more profane and contemporary meaning/philosophy (local motives as the regional identity).

The history and success stories for Yogyakarta are the values for a predicate or title as the World Batik City as it required by the World Craft Council (WCC), Asia Pacific Region in 2014. There are seven (7) requirements or criteria that must be fulfilled, as follows:

    1.    Historical Value

    2.    Originality

    3.    Conservation efforts through regeneration

    4.    Economic value

    5.    Environmentally friendly

    6.    Has an international reputation

    7.    Distribution in the community

The consequence predicate is not simple, because it is related to the conservation issues, preservation, development, and empowerment of Batik, both as an art and industry. Batik as a legacy of tangible and intangible world heritage lies in the challenges that are not simple. Among others related to technological developments, the interests of the fashion industry, and economic interest.

Yogyakarta as the venue of Jogja International Batik Biennale (JIBB) – 2018 is in the complexity of such problems. This event is first considered that Jogjakarta as the center of Javanese culture, a city from the Special Region, as a place for creative artists and intellectuals to work in discourse, is exactly the name of the international event, namely Jogja International Batik Biennale.

International refers to the level, the material, and the scope of its activity. Considering that Batik has become the art practice of the artists in various part of the world, then it automatically this event will be an international standard, including the exhibition materials (Batik artwork) and the thinker which will be presented in the seminar and other activities.

Batik is a work of art of the world heritage, with special techniques and motifs (color rhythm technique with wax (malam)/paraffin, and various classical modern motifs which opening up possibilities to be developed), that has meaning and philosophy; from a religious to a profane.

Biennale is an art event held in bi-annual duration. The Biennale was originally intended to exhibit the achievement of art creations and thoughts of art over the past two years. The implications of the exhibition can only invite and exhibit well established senior artists. However, measuring the achievement of artists within the period of two years/in the biennial is considered no longer corresponds to the reality in the field, later in the development of the last 15 years, this parameter began to be abandoned. Today, biennale events are used as a forum to present a “special” achievements of artists, anyone and anytime, as far as having the achievement of thoughts and the creation of an “important” artwork. Therefore, biennale events nowadays can bring artists into diverse experiences, as far as having a good work which fit the Biennale theme (issues) that is framed by the curator.

Referring to the explanation above, the JIBB 2018 Exhibition will rely on the riches potentials of Batik from the aspects of spiritual/religious meaning, aspects of social history and creative, in which almost always in touch with the economic aspect. The spiritual/religious aspects, aspects of social history and creative history will be elaborated through a timeline that reveals the lines of time, complete with its meanings, events, and its products. This exhibition wants to show that Yogyakarta or Special Region of Yogyakarta is indeed the center of Batik life, it is open and gives wide space to the world of Batik and its development; Batik in the meaning of the process and technique, also the traditional values that are also a religious value, until the development of a profane and economic value. All practices of Batik along with its discourse and its economic aspects are an inevitable fact of development.

Although in the timeline will be illustrated the long history of Batik and its development, but in this exhibition, it will begin from the important point of the use of Batik in the ordinance which based on the consideration of spiritual meanings, namely Classical Batik in Kraton. Then the audiences can follow each section as a part of the historical narrative from both the social and creative aspects. The intended narrative is an exhibition depicting the values of the masterpiece, the life cycle of Batik (the function journey of Batik from the birth, growing up, mature, old, until dead), historical aspect of Batik, and a bazaar that reflects the development (including the process of commodity modification) of Batik. The use of exhibition space reflects or adapted to the material of Batik, as follows:

  • 1. Pagelaran Kraton Yogyakarta and Sonobudoyo Museum: Classical Batik (‘paugeran’ or a standard use within the scope of Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat) » Classical Batik/Traditional Batik (which is believed and grown in the society).
  • 2. Vredeburg Fort Museum and Taman Budaya Yogyakarta: New Batik (the development of new techniques and motifs: Batik that develops in the fashion world; Batik as an identity of an administrative area, for example Batik Kulon Progo, Batik Bantul, Sleman, Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta City, Batik Jambi, Batik Lampung, Batik Papua, etc).
  • 3. Jogja Gallery: Batik in Contemporary Art (for example: Batik Art Painting, Batik Comic, etc).
  • 4. Bank Indonesia Museum: Batik in the frame of technology, developments in education, and art-craft (but still processed using Batik technique).
  • 5. Parallel Event (Parallel Activity) in every central location, also in local museums, Batik artisans (Bantul, Kulon Progo, Sleman, Wonosari, Yogyakarta City).

The JIBB 2018 exhibition shows the reality as it is written and implied in this curatorial title, CROSS/BORDER/BATIK. It contains two meanings at once: Boundary and Border of Batik. The word boundary will explain that the Batik world is now in the reality, it crosses the boundaries of techniques, value, and function. Batik lives and grows in the community as a part of the creative industry, which also potentially becomes the source of economy sector. While the words Border of Batik contains an understanding on why it is called Batik with all its meaning, because it has certain limits and limitations at once; both the limits of use (traditionally) and the limitations of the used medium.

The JIBB – 2018 event is a celebration for all of us – artisans, users, observers, reviewers, and society – about the world of Batik. It includes the celebration of the Batik border crossers. In addition, as to spread the important knowledge related to the ‘development’ of the world of Batik.

Through the order of the exhibition, the JIBB – 2018 events are expected to become an appreciation event as well as education for the community. From there it is expected that Batik is the cultural richness of the nation, as one of the cultural artifacts that continue to budge to discover new meanings, and becomes real.
